| Forget all you know about saying yes and no and do the opposite in Bulgaria. If you do anything here other than shake your head right and left for Yes and up and down for no, you may be misunderstood.
It is rumored that their change of body language signs for Yes and no was based on a protest by Orthodox Bulgarians when they were asked to deny their religion under Ottoman rule. It is said that the yes and no facial expressions have since been reversed. It’s not known if the legend is true, but you can get rid of the fear of being misunderstood by learning to say “da” for Yes and “what” for no. |
