| The organisational bases of Mustafa Kemal ‘s nationalist movement similarly rested on provincial notables who were instrumental in the mobilisation of the peasantry against the invading foreign powers.
The Republican People’s Party (RPP), which Mustafa Kemal founded after the establishment of the Republic in 1923, and which functioned as the ruling party of the authoritarian regime for the next 23 years, maintained the same pattern of alliance between a core group of nation-building elites at the centre and notables in the periphery. Provincial deputies of the RPP in the National Assembly came predominantly from leading local families. Undoubtedly, their access to channels of governmental patronage strengthened their social influence at the local level. |
